Filipino farm workers in Delano California went out on strike in 1965.
They wished to raise their wages from 1.20 to 1.40 an hour.
They sought out Chávez and the National Farm Workers Association for support. The Delano agricultural workers were majority Filipino workers who were affiliated with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee which was a charter of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.
The NFWA led by Chávez and the AWOC led by Filipino Larry Itliong soon united under a common goal.
Chávez soon took the reins after than and the Filipinos took a back seat and assisted him in his endeavors until January 10, 1972 when Larry Itliong Filipino organizer quits UFWOC.
Itliong is reported to have said that "he was surrounded by social revolutionaries not true labor organizers” (Salinas Californian editorial)
